PART 1B

This picture depicts the Great Depression because it shows the people in the fields barefoot and no crops are present. This means there is poor harvest on that plantation. Even little children are working in the fields. Their clothes are ragged and unclean and they all seem very skinny.

PART 2A

I see dirty feet amd ripped rags for clothing. I first noticed the dirtiness of their bare feet. All of the people are on the deck with holes. A bucket and two people are near the front of the deck and two others are near the back, one leaning on a stool. I think this image was made to show how destitute the people were during the Great depression. I think this becuase the children in the photo are barefoot. Their clothes are ripped and muddy and their bodies are very dirty. I believe this image was made during the Great Depression or around the 1930's. I wonder why the photographer chose to capture the lower parts of their bodies.

In this photo, I see three colored children. they are wearing ripped, dirty clothes. The seem down. Each person is looking off into a different direction as if waiting for something to happen. A young boy is hugging a pole whil another is holding on to it. Another shorter child is cut out of the picture. The first thing I noticed was the young boy next to the pole in the front. The seem to be on some sort of front porch or deck of a small home, almost like a little shack. I think this image was made to portray the rough states people were left in during this time and to show that everyone, even innocent children, were affected by this situation. I think this was made in a time where times were tough. I wonder why the photographer cropped out the fourth child out of the picture and when this photo was taken and where.

I see a plantation or field where corn crops are dried up and dying. The first thing I noticed was the two crops in the front of the field. They are so dry and limp. There are a few corn crops in the front of the picure. There is nothing but dirt. It looks almost like there has been a drought. As you look more into the background, the number of crops begin to increase. I think this image was made to show how bad the poor harvest was during the Great Depression. I think this image was made during the Great Depression. I have learned that during the Great Depression, the bad harvest was very severe and few crops grew by examining this image. I wonder what tools were used to create his image and where the farmers are.

PART 2B
Drinking fountain on the county courthouse lawn, Halifax, North Carolina
Drinking fountain on the county courthouse lawn, Halifax, North Carolina

I see a black child in front of a courthouse at a drinking fountain with a sign on a tree next to it saying, "Colored". The first thing i noticed was the sign on the tree. A colored boy, a lawn of a courthouse, and a little building nearby to the right of the fountain. I think this image was mad eto show the racism during the Great Depression. In the image, a young black boy is drinking out of water fountain that is specifically for blacks. I think this was made during the 1930's, when segregation was still legal.

Secondhand clothing stores and pawn shops on Beale Street, Memphis, Tennessee
Secondhand clothing stores and pawn shops on Beale Street, Memphis, Tennessee

I see 5 black men with fancy suits in a street in front of a hotel and other stores. The first thing I noticed the hotel sign and that the hotel was for "COLORED ONLY". Suits and black men and other stores are depicted in this image. This image was made to show the discrimination and racism in Memphis, Tennessee. Black men are sitting outside second hand clothing stores and pawn shops on beale street. I think this image was made suring the 1930's. I wonder why the men are wearing fancy clothes and why there aren't any women in the picture.

Birney, Montana. People who came to a Saturday night dance around the bar
Birney, Montana. People who came to a Saturday night dance around the bar

I see a bar full of all whites, men and women, with two signs. The first thing I noticed was the sign thats says, "Positively No Beer Sold To Indians". One of the signs say "God Bless America". This image was made to show that in public places, such as bars, colored folks were still not allowed. In the image, people are socializing and drinkning. I think this was made during the time when segregation was still permitted and nothing was done to stop it. I wonder if 'Indians" refers to colored people.

PART 3A
These people lived through difficult situations. They represent the Great Depression by doing whatever it was to keep a life going. It didn't matter whether the trouble be sergregation, inflation, or finding a job to pay the bills. Jim Cole worked at a packing house during the depression. He wanted to get a job in the AFL union but they didnt accept him because of his race. Clyde "Kingfish" Smith was a street vendor. He describes how during the Depression, five cents a pound for fish was very expensive. He had to attract people by singing to sell his items. A man at the Colonial Park in New York says that he believes that although blacks and whites have different colored skin, they have much in common. One thing he says they have in common is they "breathe the same air". Also, according to Mrs. Marie Haggerty, a maid during the Great Depression, everybody couldn't afford to get robbed of their money so nobody was trusted and she was always tested to see if she would steal just to see if she would get the job. This shows how precious money was during that time. Bernice, a rent party hostess, describes how she came Bermuda to New York and that she had to pay sixty-dollar rent after her husband and she was left with being a rent party hostess just to pay the bills. All these difficult situtations just to have a some-what satisying life during that time represents the Great Depression well.
